Why the current AI boom and the vanished technology of the punk writers are part of the same story…
It’s called Blue. Biological Memory. The component that can make the imitation
intelligence of AI code real. No one has it. The punks did and they took it with them.
This is only a quick follow-up to my speculations about the Isaac Asimov glitch. It’s not true that I haven’t documented this part of the story. I poured a ton of effort into a bunch of related web pages at a place called Simplesites, which offered a convenient flexible format for free. However much you could cram into 15 pages as computers expansively define them, you could post on the Internet for free. I made these sites.
Both Shuteye atTown and Shuteye Nation were there, along with multiple variations on the Undernet model, an extensive guide to my own works, and some sites that dealt wit the history of the punk writers that didn’t trap me in the newest post format that prevents Blogger from being a good narrative instrument.
Two of these in particular dealt with the dramatic ending and aftermath of Punk City in Philadelphia: ‘The South Street Mystery’ and ‘The Gypsy Gallery.’ Both were rich in completed content and still under development when Simplesite suddenly provided two weeks notice to users that their sites would be shut down permanently unless they were immediately upgraded with paid domain names and subsequent monthly fees of $30 for each such site. I was out of business at a stroke. This was in late 2022. I used the remaining time to take what screenshots of the sites I could manage, while hoping that the Modern Archive had been backing them up as they had previous sites of mine.
Unfortunately, the Modern Archive (Wayback Machine) and the Simplesite page format were not terribly compatible with one another. This is what’s still there of the two sites I just mentioned.
One other of the Gypsy pages on the Menu still works.
The same situation applies to many but not all of the Simplesites. I have bits and pieces I can still rehab and build from, but the overall situation was a catastrophe descending in about the same timeframe as Joe Biden’s Satan speech from Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
I’m a big boy though. Live by the Internet? Die by the Internet? Simple logic I’ve been living with for most of my writing life. Developing workarounds to achieve what I intended with the lost sites accounts for the time I haven’t allocated to Facebook and Instapunk Returns. Telling you this now, because I wouldn’t want you to think a new chapter of feds versus punk writers is some kind of late hand waving for attention. It’s been built into the story all along. The punk writer story was always about archaeology, the piecing together of a secret history based on what was left behind after a sudden departure. That’s why Punk City has always included the beginning of third-party thriller treatment about the links after the massacre that ends suddenly into a blank followed by a checkbox fragment of the last chapter disclosing a final confrontation between feds and the Shuteye Train many years later.
Part of the bridgework is contained but fsr from finished in Johnny’s Last Chance Garage, the place from which Johnny Dodge vanished a decade or more after the end of Punk City. He leaves in a truck equipped with a tank of Blue and the keyboard of a true quantum computer.
The centerpiece of that keyboard is not the blinking red light of HAL but the QI (Quantum Intelligence) gazing back at you.
This is what the power seekers want. They know some of the backstory of punk technology, which has to do with the complicated partnership between Tod Mercado the CEO of a Philly computer giant (‘NeoMax’ as fictionalized in Punk City but in reality probably Sperry Corp, according to the Frelinger Files) and his breakthrough innovator Percy Gale, whose genius was matched only by his eccentricity.
Speaking of Blue, Insect Brain offers one of the only closeup views
we get of Percy, starting at 6 min, 45 seconds into this audio file.
What the feds did not realize in 1985, and still don’t, is that what they aspire to in terms of Artificial Intelligence is not strictly a machine function. They do know that even primitive AI required gigantic amounts of processing memory. Why there’s much controversy about a gang of immense new data centers to take the crushing load off the main power grid, and who’s going to pay for such vast investments?
Percy knew it too, and he also knew that real computer intelligence could only be created as a kind of superposition of networking code and human processing capacity. Thus, by some means still unknown, he distilled his ‘Blue’ from human brain activity, imbuing mere water with the abstract conscious awareness that characterizes a lively, far-seeing mind. We know he learned how to mass produce his groundbreaking component because it worked and made the punks a national security threat. But how? How did he incite the kind of focused activity he could harness and proliferate at will?
This is why he almost certainly followed the guidance of Nikola Tesla, who laid down this challenge for his descendants:
Tesla discovered that power flowed through the ground without wires and was accessible. Percy discovered that thought flows through the mind without neurons and is accessible. As with laser technology, the key to accessing the power is intensifying its focus. Hence Tesla’s coils and towers. Percy Gale learned, by descending from his sterile library into the empty rattling minds of young punk’d that if he could the emotions as a laser-like searchlight he would have the power source he needed for QI. Why Percy’s most brilliant act was to partner with the South Street interloper who called himself, by turns, Mr.Magic and Kobra Jones. This curious mystic knew how to direct the young punks of South Street to the age-old Tarot deck and the expansive ka mythology he believed underlay all its symbols and triggers to thought. In short order, the Tarot ruled South Street. The punks used it for every decision, even as the basis for the structure and organization of The Boomer Bible. They learned how to light up their unified intersections of individual thought. And Percy how to harvest the energy that light generated. All from a deck of cards.
It’s called ‘Sensitive Dependence on Initial Conditions’; nothing
says an initial condition can’t be simple and still go infinite.
There was an actual event that catalyzed all of Punk City. A localized ‘Big Bang’ if you will. Inspired by Mr. Magic, the mongoloid dwarf named Gypsy Jackknife used his street artist chalks to draw an enormous rendering of the Raptor Ka on the pavement of Headhouse Square at the terminus of South Street.
‘CKT’ Stands for Cream King Trove, the underground cache of punk equipment,
art, and manuscript leavings discovered by Mark Frelinger’s dad, Frank, in 1987.
Doubts about the historicity of this drawing have to explain the documentary evidence of the extraordinary phase in punk behaviors that followed. Also found in the Cream King King arrive and subsequently included in Pumk City was a lexicon of “Firstung,” a barely comprehensible variant of ordinary English that became the instant lingua Franca of South Street for some weeks or months, depending on how you date the available sources.
It goes on…
It’s not just slang names and nouns. In the second graphic shown above, we find the word ‘decome,” which is not just a variant of ‘become,’ but a novel vehicle for the concept of reciprocal transitiveness in verbs. That is, it simultaneously indicates both the act of changing to and changing from. It’s the verbal equivalent of ‘full duplex’ in computer data communications, like a modem that sends and receives concurrently. The punks are acting on their surroundings in a new way, and the surroundings are acrion on them in a new way. Thus the superposition of the punks and their quantum devices.
As a new state of mind, this created a chaos that had to be worked through before Firstung became understandable SouthSpeak. This was probably also the origination of the dangerous punk practice of drinking the Blue to heighten their creative powers. It worked to some degree but created problems as well. These are hard to document because the only narrative we have of a “Blue trip” was written by the visiting journalist Boz Baker, who was tricked into trying the substance and then experienced a level of terror well beyond anything in his experience.
Where we are. Why the feds imprisoned and interrogated Daniel Pangloss. Why the young woman named Heidi went desperately in search of her missing guardian Johnny Dodge. Why Mark Frelinger is obsessed with proving the punk writers of South Street were real and I am only an opportunistic conman taking credit for their work for reasons unknown. IF I am even still alive…
Which I tend to think I am. But it might be harder to prove in my case than most, given how far I’ve lived under the radar for so many years. I have a driver’s license and a voting record, but who doesn’t these days? Proves nothing in the Year 2026.
Afterthought. All the broken websites are a matter,of record and can be proven to have existed. They therefore bolster the argument that there has been a conspiracy of some kind to suppress general acceptance of the reality of Punk City, which would further complicate the black ops efforts to locate and expunged them once and for all, in secret.
But at least they can’t undo the reality of this…
UPDATE: Follow-up to this post, discovered in passing. Interesting coincidence?
